Bio

I got into photography in my early 20's, nearly a century ago (well, it seems like it!). Using a Konica Rangefinder camera, which I still have, I taught myself photography through books (remember those?) and through trial and error (2% trial, 98% error). I eventually even converted my one bathroom in my apartment into a darkroom that had to be "multi-use" much to anyone's chagrin who opted to use it for its originally intended use.

Then, life happened. Which meant a professional career including owning my own business and also starting a family. Which led - wholly unplanned - to shared caregiving responsibilities for a family member for many years. Which meant basically no time for photography.

Until, that is, I found I missed it so much I made time later in life and resumed this passion with classes, workshops, online classes, etc. and of course getting out and shooting. I use a mirrorless Canon R6 and the Canon DSLR 5DS R now but I'll never part with that Konica nor an old Nikon film camera I still own. I have embraced today's software programs for photography but those principles of good photography decades ago from books still drive my work today.

Stop. Look. Interpret.

Whenever I take a photograph, my goal is to visually interpret the present moment, no matter what the subject is. Photography allows me to intersect space, time and light as “seen” from multiple points of view. I strive to discover a unique point of view, whether that be a story, composition or play of light, and then turn that into my photograph. Most of my photographs project an air of mystery – what is the subject? what is the story? I use post-processing to enhance the vision I have of the final image. That may render the image a painterly, dreamlike quality or it may produce a gritty reality, whatever my vision calls for. I eschew labels of genre or style so that I do not limit myself from capturing an interesting photograph.

I am fortunate to live in beautiful Colorado but I believe in seeing beauty in any place at any time. That's why the "tag line" of my website is "Visually interpreting the present moment".
